Residential Case Study / 2025
A closed staircase opened up into the centrepiece of the home
Right Group Construction rebuilt a North Shore staircase with white oak treads, a new railing system and code-compliant guards, transforming a closed stairwell into the main architectural feature of the home.

Guard Compliance
01 / The Challenge
The existing staircase was carpeted, boxed in, and out of level by nearly an inch top to bottom. Opening it up meant rebuilding treads to a consistent rise while meeting BC Building Code guard and baluster requirements.
Scope Delivered
- White oak stair treads and risers
- Custom railing and guard system
- Code-compliant baluster spacing
- Newel posts and handrail returns
- Adjoining trim and finishing
02 / Our Approach
Rise corrected before finish
We corrected the stringer and rise variance first, so every tread lands at the same height — the difference you feel underfoot before you notice it visually.
Guards designed to code, not around it
Baluster spacing, guard height and handrail graspability were designed to BC Building Code from the start, so the design survived inspection unchanged.
Finish carried into the landing
Trim, skirting and landing details were carried through so the stair reads as built-in, not bolted on.

03 / The Outcome
- Consistent rise across all 17 treads after stringer correction.
- Guard and railing system passed inspection without rework.
- Completed in three weeks on site with the family living in the home.
“It's the first thing anyone comments on now. You'd never know it used to be a carpeted box.”
